Uninformed Writing
I was updating stories for this week's events and came across this commentary in USA Today by Jon Saraceno. It's your run of the mill "let's rag on a lesser known league" column. But, there is a common pattern that surrounds these kinds of pieces. They usually are done by someone who you don't normally read. (Like me, right?) They usually contain little or no facts to back up the bashing. And then they make some kind of outlandish claim for how to fix things that oversimplifies the problems and makes the columnist look kind of bad in the process. This work fits that criteria nicely.
While I'm not saying that the LPGA does not have problem, Saraceno really seems to be off point here. At times, he comes across as mildly xenophobic, others potentially sexist.
He does bring up the point of asking the motivation of a sponsor to spend millions to get involved with niche events on the LPGA Tour. I could ask the same reason for why PODS decided to spend $6 million to sponsor a PGA Tour event. Or, why Russell Athletic sponsors the Arena League, or why ESPN bought a stake in ownership of that league? Because they can. Duh.
