Shoving Avenel Down Our Throats?

Len Shapiro seems to be insinuating that his sources are indicating that if they cannot convince Tiger Woods and his foundation to host the National there for 2010 and 2011, that they may very well take away the Senior Players Championship from Baltimore Country Club (one of my favorite courses and one I played in high school) and move it to Avenel.

According to sources granted anonymity because no plans have been set, the tour also is exploring the possibility of conducting the Senior Players Championship, one of four majors on the Champions Tour, at the newly configured course. That tournament, usually scheduled in the fall, has a contract to play at Baltimore Country Club/Five Farms in Timonium, Md., through 2010, about the same time TPC Potomac should have matured enough for tournament play. But the tour knows a senior major championship in the nation's capital likely would draw bigger crowds and more media coverage.
I have received communication from the folks at Avenel, providing an open invitation to check the facility out and see the changes. I'd still like to do that, but it will be tough to cast off the shackles of old Avenel - being officially renamed TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms. Shapiro did take a tour of the facility and some of the photos are at the link. We'll just have to cross our fingers and see what turns out.

I was a volunteer at The Kemper Open for the last five years at Congressional and the first four years at Avenel. Most of the players I spoke with hated Avenel.

One player called it a "goat ranch" and one player who had won a major and regularly participated at Congressional said he was "one and done" here.

A buddy of mine in the media would play every media day and said there was nothing exciting about the course at all and he could see why players were turned off by it.

Not even sure why the PGA Tour is investing $25 million here when Tiger has said he has no interest in moving his tournament there. I think he was being nice when he said he's look at the renovations.
