Ochoa Wants to Personally Save Superstition Mountain

Lorena Ochoa has been getting a lot of great press lately. And it is well deserved from her efforts with thanking golf course workers and Ping workers directly, to winning 3 of 4 starts this year - including a major, to NOW single handedly wanting to save the soon to be former Safeway International.

"It is such a great tournament," Ochoa said. "We always talk about how it's really professional.

"I'm going to ask my sponsors to see if they want to support the tournament, I mean, hopefully, anywhere in Arizona. It's such a great venue, and you can see the fans' (support). It would be a shame to lose the tournament. If I can help them, let me know."
She has plenty of sponsors to draw from:
Ochoa's long list of sponsors includes Banamex, Citigroup, Audi, Rolex, Lacoste, Ping and Aeromexico.
Banamex, her main sponsor, has plenty of clout as Mexico's largest banking institution and an affiliate of Citigroup Inc.
It sounded like a surprise to Tournament Golf Foundation's Tom Maletis:
"To get that kind of support from a marquee player is always a good feeling," Maletis said. "It was the first time I had heard Lorena say anything like that, but I will definitely talk to her about it this week at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. It was interesting to hear how she felt about it."
That's how important this event is to the Tour. Very impressive from Ochoa.

Funny, she volunteered for the job during interviews at the tournament itself, so I don't understand why the dude you quoted sounded so surprised. If she and Annika team up, the Phoenix event will definitely be saved. Even if not, it probably will be.
