Something's Wrong in Bighorn?
Thomas Bonk of the LA Times penned a Samsung World Championship preview piece that describes quite accurately that something is amiss in Bighorn this week.
First, there is that Michelle Wie is in the 20 player field. She accepted the sponsor's exemption in May, before she played her first LPGA Tour event of the season, narrowly evaded Rule 88, had a fight with Annika Sorenstam, and made it known that she's having a real hard time breaking 80 right now.
Second, is that Annika Sorenstam is not in the field. Annika owns this event traditionally, but this season may turn out to be her first winless season since her rookie year. Injuries, other commitments (personal and professional), and perhaps even time have caused Annika to not be in winning form this year. She was offered a made up exemption - active Hall of Fame member (which happens in no other sport but golf) - but declined because two other golfers to fit that criteria were not invited ahead of her based on their season performance in 2007.
Third, you have a 20 player field. I personally like this, but some people find limited field events awful. I am one of those when it comes to the PGA Tour because there are just so many, but that is not the case on the LPGA Tour. They can be wonderful as a novelty, like this event is. But, for the person insistent on full field events, the ultra limited field would make them steam.
Even still, this should be fun. Ochoa and Pettersen tee off the opening round together today.
