Jack Not Coming Back? Player Too?!
Reuters has been reporting that there are hints in what both Captains Player and Nicklaus said following the Prez Cup that they will not be returning to their positions for the 2009 competition in San Francisco (Harding Park).
Tim Finchem, whatever you have to do in order to get both of these great ambassadors for the game to come back, do it. They are the reason that the Presidents Cup has any kind of momentum at all.
The players on both sides have been extremely complimentary of Nicklaus and Player, their styles, their ability to inspire, and the good nature with which they carry themselves in this format. They make it loose and fun to play in this competition. It is a departure from the Ryder Cup in its level of intensity, and that is actually a good thing because to feign that intensity in the President's Cup would be to totally destroy it.
Fairly memorable moments have happened under their watch - the tie at Fancourt and the dramatics of 2005 at RTJ. They're the only defining moments of the entire competition's history unless you count the Aquaman incident. It's not a coincidence.
