Can't We Act Sophisticated Here?
Sam Torrance is becoming a thorn in the side of Nick Faldo. First, Torrance bloviated his opinion and encouraged Paul McGinley following his announced decision to resign his position as vice-captain of the '08 Ryder Cup team. He said that Faldo was misguided (kindly speaking) in seeking out captains so soon.
Then, this past week, Faldo publicly said that Colin Montgomerie has been a pain in his efforts to rally the troops well in advance of the matches. Torrance again came out against Faldo and his public comments.
It seems kind of silly that two grown men in their 50s are fighting in public about team spirit and makeup for a three day golf event. I know that the Ryder Cup is a big deal - way bigger of a deal over there than it is here in the United States - but this is kind of ridiculous.
Nick Faldo has been named captain and has earned the right to call the shots how he wants. Should he have named vice-captains so quickly? Maybe not. Should Faldo have called out Monty in public? Why not? Monty calls everyone else out and he is a crusader against slow play. It's all fair play.
Thank God we don't have that kind of squabbling here among the US players...at least not as obviously known. Ha!
