Final FedEx Cup Thoughts
Ok, the first FEC is over and now it's time to regroup. Here are some quick bullet points:
- In the end, the best player was identified as the champion of the season, even though he chose to skip one of the four events. That shows just how far ahead Woods is of the rest of the Tour.
- Tiger Woods may have won the FedEx Cup, but Phil Mickelson is its MVP. If you read my column this week, you'll see this point explored more deeply.
- Despite all of the problems off of the course and with a course (East Lake), the tournaments themselves were spectacular viewing. The PGA Tour hasn't seen four good weeks in a row like this in a long time...maybe ever.
- The FedEx Cup will almost certainly be tweaked. There have been so many suggestions made, but it will certainly be curious as to which the Tour decides to adopt. I'm hoping for a few of mine!
- The PGA Tour will have to rename these Playoffs as something more accurately describing the action. Invariably, using the word "playoff" (cue Jim Mora) will cause some people to squirm and cause journalists to make sports comparisons that are easy cheap shots at golf.
PLAYOFFS?!
- It will be interesting to see if and how the European Tour decides to respond to the FedEx Cup next year. Not that the Seve Trophy isn't interesting, but it's no match for the PGA Tour. I would be interested to see the 2009 Euro Tour season start before the 2008 PGA Tour season ends, though.
- In the end, the FEC is simply a change of scheduling, throwing a lot of money in a concentrated period, and four straight limited field events. Sounds like what the Tour is doing already but they also give out a trophy at the end.
