Movin' Again

There's a rumor going around that the Wyndham Championship (you know, the event in Greensboro) is changing venues in 2008. The funny thing is that it would be moving back to a place that used to hold the event in the past: Sedgefield. It held the event for 16 years. But, that's not the story so much as the consistent nature of rumors surrounding tournaments. There's rumors about sponsorships, dates, keeping or cutting events, and host courses.

Perhaps it was just not popular a few years ago for tournaments to be so ridiculously unstable. It seems, though, that the health of the golf economy has a major impact upon all of these rumors, though. It has become increasingly more expensive and straining for a company to pony up the millions of dollars to become a title sponsor for a major golf tournament. Really, there are better investments out there.

All of the major American tours are undergoing serious restructuring - nixing events that won't conform to the new models or old standbys that have just run their course. In their place comes a huge schedule shift that just makes classic fans feel like the game is radically changing before their eyes.

The times they are a changin', said Bob Dylan. The funny thing is that Bob Dylan bought a mansion on a golf course. So, his lyrics have never been more appropriate.
